About us

   HAFLINGERS ARE LIKE POTATO CHIPS

Like many Haflinger owners, our love affair with HAFLINGERS began by seeing a team driven at a local draft horse event.  The gracious owner, Dave Ayers, talked enthusiastically about his horses and the breed.  Seeds were planted in our minds and hearts.  Our daughter Lydia was a young teen at the time.  Knowing our interest, Dave called a few months later with news of a purebred filly without papers.  Soon  Winnie joined us.  Later Lily came along to match Winnie, there were visits to stallions, trips to sales, and several Haflinger breeder herds.

Paul is a student of pedigrees and breed magazines, carefully studying photos, sale catalogs, and

talking with other breeders, seeking out particular animals at sale barns to see the progeny of individual stallions and mares.  He has the ability to evaluate a young horse and envisio how it may develop as time passes.  It is his vision that guides our breeding program.

As we became acquainted with the Haflinger breed, Paul observed a line of mares that embodied the qualities we wanted in our breeding mares-

bulletpeople pleasing personalities-willing to work or play hard
bulletfeminine heads and necks
bulletcorrect conformation, especially feet and legs
bulletefficient use of hay and pasture
bulleteasy breeding and foaling, excellent mothering ability
bulletability to pass their strengths to their offspring

The common factor that emerged was a stallion named Anders, son of Adam America and Barbl, both early imports.  In every breed of animal there are individuals that possess the ability to stamp a lasting mark on succeeding generations.  Anders was such a prepotent individual. He passed to his daughters the qualities we wanted and they in turn passed them to their sons and daughters.  Within our current brood mare band two-thirds of the mares are direct descendants of Anders.

Sue, the other half of the Promised Land team,  trains the weanlings in manners and two year olds in ground work.   Her bond with the horses is intuitive, flowing from a mixture of artistic gifts and life-long passion for animals. She is also the record keeper and photographer.   Together  we are working toward breeding and making available to people who want to share the Haflinger experience, people loving and beautiful Haflingers.
